trouble shifting P to R

Has anyone else had problems shifting their automatic trib from Park to Reverse? This has been an on and off problem for me, where the shifter is stuck and will not budge. At times, I literally have to physically force the column shifter out of park, at which point it will hop across as the gears and land at Drive or 2. It seems to happen most when parked on inclines( I live on a hill). And yes, I always have the break pedal depressed when shifting.

The question would be, "Are you coming to a complete stop, engaging the Parking brake and then shifting into Park before getting out of the car?" The problem is if you don't use the parking brake, the gravity of the car rolling backwards or forwards will cause the Park tooth of the transmission to hold all of the weight of the vehicle which will cause it to be extremely hard to shift out of Park. This is a common thing.

HTH John

jc is correct - this is a common problem - happens in my olds intrigue too. just do what jc says and you'll be ok. on an incline, apply the parking brake while still in drive or reverse, then put into park.

Hi Lbarbados,

I live in a hilly area and have noticed the same problem. I believe it is due to being parked on an incline when not using the parking brake. Now when I park on an incline, after slipping it into park-BEFORE taking my foot off the brake, I engage the parking brake (or emergency brake-whichever you like to call it). Then when I return, I start it up, slip it into drive and THEN release the parking brake. I have not had any problems since. My old toyota used to do the same thing....

Lily11224

I have this problem too but only since my first service. It was OK before then ! It's no good saying get over the problem by pulling on the parking brake first. It should be adjusted and should select any gear and Park/Reverse smoothly as mine did before the service. I will take it back to the dealer and leave it till it's fixed.
