Is there a difference when using the term "sunroof" vs. "moonroof"?

BTW... I walked into my local Mazda dealer on 12/28 to test drive a Tribute. I'd done a lot of research and decided I really wanted a Trib, but wanted to drive one first. He said he had a platinum LX 4x4 ABS w/lux & towing arriving (supposedly) that week. I told him I'd take it and put down a deposit. It finally arrived last Tuesday and I picked it up on Thursday. I've got about 220 miles on it and I absolutely love it! Been getting around 17.4 MPG. Haven't had any problems w/fuel smell but it hasn't been over 38 degrees yet here in upstate NY. The regular all-season tires seem to work great on the snow (which we get A LOT of). I have to start saving my $$ to get the all-weather floor mats.

So far, this has been the best experience I've had buying a new car. This forum is a great source of information!

I believe (note: I'm not sure) moonroofs are made of glass and sunroofs aren't.

Congratulations on your new tribute! Welcome to the pack!

From what I've seen in other cars, Sunroofs let the sun in through the ceiling in the car (whether they are closed or not) since they're made of clear material (glass or plastic). A Moonroof is basically a variation of a sunroof which is permanently covered (usually made out of the same material as the car roof) and won't let the sun through unless it's opened.

Still, there are variations, pop up sunroofs and sunroofs which either slide into the ceiling when opened or above the ceiling when opened. But that's a whole other subject.

HTH
