Yes you can do it yourself, you can buy a pair of loaded struts that just bolt on, or buy the struts and take the springs off yours and put them on the new struts.
A tool for compressing the springs can be rented at most auto parts stores, or you can buy a tool at harbor freight for around 20 dollars, the rental tool costs you nothing just a deposit on your credit card and an instant credit when you bring back the tool.
Last winter I put a set of Koni struts and shocks on my 06 civic si it cost me a little over a 100 for 2 struts and 2 shocks.
The winter before last I had a set of rear struts put on a 91 miata I had that winter, just because the temperature was well below normal and I don't have a heated garage I had those installed at cole muffler, they used fairly good struts but not the best, the cost depends on just what kind of struts you want.( those cost me about 250 for being lazy)
If you are just going to drive like a normal person get gabreil or some other regular shock maker, if your going for high end shock/strut brand that is up to you.
