Hey man, in short the answer is no. Your transmision is probably fine, like mine - you'll find that the rubber gear shift bushings have worn out - this happens in lots of old mazda rotarys. It is pretty cheap to replace. When the rubber bushings go - it creates lots of freeplay even when the car is in gear. Any decent auto wrecker shoud be able to supply bushings.
