I have developed a cricket/chirping noise out of the subwoofer or speaker in that area when I'm playing music. Before I try taking it in for service I'd appreciate having an idea what the problem might be. Thanks in advance.

Dave

Do you have the squeek/chirp all the time, or just when you're driving.

With all of the complaints about the rear hatch making squeeks, I'd hate for that to be your problem while blaming the subwoofer.

Just an idea?

Good double check, but it is definetly the speaker as it comes and goes with pitch of the music.

Dave

I get a chirping from my speakers as well - not sure its the subwoofer though - I thought it was one of the front speakers, but it just started and I haven't had a chance to look into it yet. The chirping isn't frequent (maybe once every 10 or 15 minutes), and at first, I thought it was something else, but I've noticed it only happens when the radio is on. Let me know if you find anything out.

This sounds suspiciously like amplifier instability/oscillation. What conditions are these chirps heard? i.e. volume, bass boost, program content, etc. In other words, are you approaching the limits of the equipment?

Haven't done much fiddling with it yet to see where it comes and goes, but I'm not pushing the limits in any of the areas. On my drive home last night and in this morning, no chirping, and the settings on the radio pretty much the same as before - very strange. If it comes back again, I'll have Mazda check it out.
