Hi ya'll. As you can tell by my user name, I'm here about my wife's '99 Miata.
Was thinking about trading it in and get her into a new car, but to tell you the truth, there's nothing wrong with her Miata. Well there is a bad spot rusting through just fwd of the right rear tire which will have to be dealt with soon. Apparently there is an internal leak there. Other that that, it's a fine running and good looking little car.
But since the car runs so well and looks great, I'm thinking about a few upgrades.
First up are the leather seat covers.
The driver's side does show some wear and cracking in the leather. I would like to either put some decent covers on the seats or have them reupolstered. Not necessarily in leather.
Does anybody recommend a good cover for these seats that are fairly easy to install and look good? I also spotted some seat heaters that would be a nice upgrade for her. She always wanted seat heaters and installing them during the seat cover installation would seem to make sense.

I also spotted something else that she would enjoy immensely. It's a navigation system that says it has an FM transmitter and can handle phone calls. Does this mean it will give verbal directions through the existing stereo (Bose system)? And it has a Bluetooth system for her cell phone?

Hey there - not sure if you are still watching this forum at all based on the date of this post and the fact that it is your only one. I'll take a shot at answering your question anyway.

The rust spot actually sounds like a clogged rain rail drain. This would be next to the hinge point of the soft top - by the seatbelt towers. Often they get clogged up with spiderwebs or debris and cleaning them out from the top to the bottom (not the other way around) due to a "valve" in the drain.

After you fix the source of the leak, sand off the rust and spray paint on a rust converter.

For the seat covers, it all depends on what you want to spend. The less expensive, poor fitting examples are on eBay, but sites like Moss Motors or Rosenthal Mazda will have higher end options that look really nice. Maybe too nice, depending on your interior! I don't know about the heater - I would think you need to make sure the seat cover is compatible with a heater.

To your final question - yes. It has bluetooth and transmits to an FM station. You tune to that station in your car's stereo and can hear whatever the nav unit is sending out. The microphone is in the nav unit, and I can't speak to voice commands on your particular model.

Hope you got the answers you were looking for!
