Hi Friends!

This is Lily11224. I am still on vacation here in NY and now I have a bit of a problem.

With all the bridge closures, I am not sure how I can get back to Michigan. I am staying in Fresh Meadows with a friend who is so familiar that she ends up being no help because she cannot translate directions into layman's english (in other words, to a native new yorker who never drove in NY-subway dweller!).

I took the GWB and the Throgs neck bridge to get here but with the word that the bridges are open and now they are closed, I am not sure what to do. I am supposed to leave about 5 am tomorrow morning. AAA is even having problems keeping up with the closures & reopenings.

Help!

Thanks for any advice you all can provide. I just cannot believe this has happened....again! I was still living in NY during the bombing of the WTC and thought I would never live to see anything like that in the US. This is terrifying and I am so sorry for all the families & friends of those lost & unfounded. My friends are mostly in parole, dea & police and needless to say-this has really been all that we can talk about. Thank God, one of us-a Police sargeant-was just found last night. He was in the first bombing too so it was definitely deja vu.

God bless you all and stay safe!

Lily11224

You may just have to wait it out. The bridges and tunnels are a very important part of the NYC infrastructure. They can't stay closed for very long. I imagine that they will be open shortly, and you will be able to get back.

Other than that it would be very difficult to circumvent the city, and you would probably wish you sat tight and waited instead.

Good luck!

lily

if you took thr throgs neck bridge, I'm assuming you are in queens or long island?

your best bet is to go back over that bridge again and then head north. try to work toward the tappan zee bridge & then the NYS thruway. from there you can look at maps & connect with I-84 to I-80 west or rte 17 west all the way to jamestown to erie, pa.

if the bridges are closed you can work your way through queens to the tri-borough bridge, pick up the major deegan north past yankee stadium and then the GW bridge which is open outbound to NJ. then pick up I-80 west.

if your gonna attempt it try to leave real early even before 5am - like 4am to avoid traffic.

good luck lily
get home safe

tinoman

I agree w/ tmgaz1025 -- just stay put for now as your best bet is to take those bridges/tunnels. This place needs to have transportation restored, and soon, before more problems arise. As it is, we've been told there might be a shortage of supplies (food, drinks, etc.) if this continues. Businesses relying on freight trucks and deliveries are heavily dependent on these modes of transportation. In essence, these closings are temporary and you'll be on your way home soon enough.

Hang in there ... and while you're here, visit Long Island -- the wineries, historic places, etc. -- if the highways permit.

Having gone to college up state N.Y. called for long weekend road trips....Anyway....I know of an ole' Auto-Train route that used to leave out of that area.....would take you out of the city but I'm not sure to where the first stop is. I know it is off base thinking perhaps but I do know there used to be that service and you wouldn't have the problem of when the bridges do open having massive tie ups....which is inevitable. I also read Tinoman's route which is what recalled me to the Auto-Train...His route would certainly work BUT it also coincides with military supply routes that don't go on the bridges...that is I/We have no idea what extent the National Guard has at its disposal there in the outskirts...so it could be a bottleneck that way also.

I'd stay put...or try mapping out all possibilities on a sheet of paper and BEFORE any execution of any exit...make some inquiries.
