recently replaced this costly little item on my
91 V6 mpv...was wondering if it a design problem
there have been a rash of replacements in vancouver on
the 89-91 model years...30-40 replaced here in
vancouver in a space of three months...any similar
experience in the club...this part is $480 canadian with
labor a $700 repair ouch!
I've had my '90 for almost seven years and
haven't heard a peep from the igniter. It may have been
part of a bad lot that were put on a bunch of MPVs
destined for Canada. Otherwise, I wouldn't have any clue
to the rash of failures. I don't understand the
labor fee though, the thing is right inside the
distributor. Even if you had to remove the distributor it
would seem to be an easy fix??? Anyone else have some
input?
Thanks for your response. Recently to add insult
to injury the 130,000 engine warning light came
<br>on as a reminder to check the emissions system. The
light has to be turned off by going behind the
dashboard ($75.00 labor)...another example of mazda
engineers at work they should have called the company :
MADza.

I dont think that is uncommon. A friend with a BMW had the same issue, except the labor was even more expensive to fix. So he chose to ignore it for the longest time. The Germans are smart though. They put the check engine light on the passenger side of the dash. Everytime he had a passenger in his car they informed my friend the check engine light was on. Thats what finally drove him nuts. He bought a chilton manual and found where the switch could be reset. But it was so hard to get to, even with his long skinny arms, he said he would pay someone else to do it next time.
