Does anybody have tips and pointers that would help me develop about 350 horsepower out of my turbo charged Gen II RX7. The budget is not realy a problem (within reason) but realiability is paramount. Should I be using an aftermarket computer to run 10 psi or are there reliable modifications I can make to the existing computer? Should I consider twin turbo and if I do / do not, what should I look at for exhaust? Is the type of turbo realy important and can I run an extra front mount intercooler in series with the existing intercooler? Can someone recomend good reading for the project I am about to tackle. Thanx RX rev heads. Murray

hey, how's it going?
if your looking to build up a fast rotary engine, 2 things are really important, one you need to keep it clean for the street(no fun if you can't drive it)
two, gotta consider the rotary engine...
a dual turbo would be a good idea, and is pretty fuel efficient, one thing that would really boost HP in a hurry is NOS,
there are a couple companies that make kits for the 2nd gen rx-7, check around on the web and see, they range in price.. and horsepower, some kits can give 10, others can give over 1,000.. but you'll have to run colder plugs, retard the ignition, etc.....
as far as exhaust, tanabe, greddy, or pacesetter are pretty popular brands for the rx-7, Greddy sounds really nice with the rotary engine.. but one thing that really sounds great, and adds alot of power is RacingBeat exhaust.. (www.racingbeat.com) see if they have anything that can help..
hope this helps you out some.
John

Start with the Exhaust system. Period. Racing Beat has some good stuff - and you may also check out RX7.Com. The better your exhaust flow, the better your rotary breaths, the more fuel you can burn. (I'm installing a Bonez system in my first gen in 2 weeks or so.)
The next step is intake. K&N air filters are the BEST. You may want their performance kit as well.
After that, consider your budget and decide between ignitions... I've heard good things about HKS, MSD and Jacobs. I decided to go with Jacobs myself - personal choice - but most people claim MSD and HKS are the better bang for the buck. Read up on it, ask questions, learn it, make a decision.
Stock ignition coils should be just dandy. Upgrade as needed to match the ignition system of your choosing.

At this point you may be wondering why you chose a target of 350hp... Your car should be eating Rustangs and all sorts of other boingers by now. It should have been doing that with the exhaust upgrade almost immediately. But IF - and ONLY IF - you decide to go further and spend the big bucks, read further.

Before you do ANYTHING below, I suggest that you take a good look at your brakes.... Are they up for the abuse you'll give them? Faster is nice, but stopping at the expense of the aerodynamic shape of your 2nd gen RX-7 may not be what you desire. I hate seeing *any* RX-7 get crunched.

Also, before beefing up much more, make sure that you are getting all your horsies to the ground. Tires. Shocks. Springs.

You're going beyond stock now... (Sure, turbos can be stock, but they didn't ship with the mods you did -hopefully- above).

Turbo will cost you, and it adds great juice. So does porting - see Mazspeed.com's section on porting to get more info on it.

Turbos are a great addition to any vehicle. Porting changes the power bands on your vehicle - the site I pointed you at gives you a fair idea of what to expect. I've driven turbos, street ports, bridge ports, and even one peripheral port... They all are different. Before porting, try to drive a car with a similar port you are thinking about to see if it's got what you want. (My personal opinion on ports is don't go beyond street port for normal driving). Porting may also affect your emissions... if that's important, drop a turbo or supercharger on the thing.

You now have a car that should put out around 300-350 hp. Adding NOS will get you more toward the 350 or above it... and will also SIGNIFICANTLY decrease your engine's life.

If you still have money left over, throw a good paint job on it, maybe a spoiler or two, maybe tint the windows. Send a picture when you're done. :)

Murray: My 87 TII runs about 325 hp. I have read the other responses and, respectfully, here is where you need to begin, first and foremost is fuel supply, replace the stock fuel pump with a higher flow rate unit, also it needs to have a constant 12V power supply, no drop or fluctuation. Check out some of the RX-7 webpages for the fuel pump rewire mod. Add a FCD. Fuel starvation to the rear rotor is the cause of most engine failures. Next go to a larger turbo than the stock unit. I am running a stock intercooler but a FMIC is preferrable. Remove the EGR, BAC valve and stock air box. Remove the oil metering pump and run premix. Remove the stock fan and install an electric fan. This reduces the motor to one fan belt for the alternator and no mechanical fan creating drag. I agree with the K&N filter as that is what I am using but I am also working on fabricating a cold air supply system. Also do the throttle body mod to remove the cold start assist. Finally, there are several quality exhausts on the market. I am running a Borla stainless steel exhaust with down pipe in place of the pre-cat and straight pipe replacing the main cat. Finally add some type of boost controller and BOV. The stock ECU is not bad and that is what I am running, but I am looking to replace it in the future. If your engine has a good or fair number of miles on it, start with a tear down and rebuild. Get it ported and go with 3mm ceramic apex seals. I would not suggest that you move forward with significant mods on a moderate to high mileage engine.
