No need to change the filter (stainless steel screen), just remove and clean. Of course then replace. It is accessible when you remove the transmission oil pan. A new screen is $100 plus!

You may have one of the ealier 95 S's which had a radiator with inadequate cooling capacity, the later radiators had 40% more capacity and kept the transmission much cooler. Ir you are interested I can tell you how to tell the difference.

I also have a 95S and have occaisional hard shifting. It seems to come (and even then not often) after I have driven the car and then restart it within the next hour. I think that it is some electronic sensor or such that gets mixed up. Last week, after a short stop, I took off and it shifted so hard that the tires chirped. Last spring it was getting consistent, but then all summer it never acted up.

Please tell me how to tell the difference. I've already gone through one tranny. I was thinking of adding a tranny cooler. What do you think?

You have to remove one of the fans and count the crossflow tubes on the radiator the later radiator has 52, the earlier has 36. Another screwup by Mazda. If you do have the earlier radiator get back to me and I will send info.
Another way to tell is to ask a Mazda Parts person
You will have to give him your VIN.
