Actually I had been meaning to see if the Escape and Trib stereos. Based on the wattage, it seems the Mazda isn't the MACH system like in the Ford. Anyone know more details? Maybe Mazda just adds 3 speakers while Ford upgrades the original four too?

From the websites:

MAZDA TRIBUTE:
"Premium" = 190-watt AM/FM/Cassette with 6-disc in dash changer with digital clock + 7 speakers premium audio prep(4 std speakers plus 2 tweeters and 1 sub woofer)

FORD ESCAPE (2 MACH options):
MACH? Audio System with Dual Media (CD/cassette), clock, 7 premium speakers, including a subwoofer
- OR -
MACH? Audio System with 6-disc in-dash CD radio, clock, 7 premium speakers, including a subwoofer (300 watts of peak power)

The 190W vs 300W difference you noticed is really no difference at all. The 190W Ford uses is a common rating of "average" power (i.e. rms) while the Mazda mentions 300W of peak power (i.e. max). Both ratings are the same for both stereos.

One curious thing my dealer said was that the speakers in the Mazda Premiun system were Bose. Which could be true but I doubt it. Only way to tell is to open up a door panel, pull the speaker
out and read the stamping on the back. My ears certainly can't tell ;-)
