The wheels on all vehicles are always turning at
different speeds as we go around corners; the out side
wheels must travel farther than the inside wheels. The
differential in a rear wheel drive vehicle or the transaxle in
a front wheel drive vehicle allows this to happen.
The problem occurs on slippery roads when all the
power starts to go to the tire with most slip. Just
opposite of what we want. In 4x4s, the differentials lock
up in order to transmit power more evenly to all the
tires. The unequal wheel speed is not a problem in snow
or mud since they can slip a bit. On dry pavement,
the tires cannot slip at all and this may cause you
to lose control of the vehicle. Full time or
allwheel drive vehicle have differentials that compensate
for the need of the tires to travel at different
speeds.
