i like the firestones, i saw an escape with some other brand i had never heard of and i thought it looked stupid. i don't blame the explorer or the firestones, they were probably just a bad combination together -plus the tribute firestones are different tires than the ones than those on the explorer

My Firestones have 6000 miles on them and look fine. Then again, they are now under the stairs in my garage. I decided to take preventative action after a co-worker had the classic blowout on his Wilderness HT. True, it was a slightly different size, but I decided not to wait and find out I had a problem through experience. I put on a set of Kelly SUVs that have a pronounced pair of water grooves. They have been great (about 1500 miles) and I think they look better than the Firestone. Several people have made that unsolicited remark after seeing the Trib and I had not even told them I replaced the tires.

No problems with the Firestone HTs on the Trib.

Bought a set of Firestone Sealix (self-sealing) tires for my Chrysler T&C. These tires can take a puncture of 3/8 w/o going flat. Bought them based on the www.tirerack.com reviews and so far, they are everything the reviews say they are.... very pleased, very quiet tire.

Great price, $102 installed and balanced at the local Firestone dealer for 16" wheels.

Greg

Is that a 3/8" puncture in the sidewall, or in the tread? I'd still be nervous - the last 3 flats I've had are from the ~3in fence nails. :(
They're building new homes over here and it's like an obsticle couse.

I have previously (don't ask me when) reported a failure of HT's...traveling at 5 mph, my wife encountered a curb which the front right tire hopped over, splitting the sidewall causing immediate flat. Car had 4500 miles at the time. Thankfully this didn't occur with tire encountering a road hazzard at 65 mph!
The next day, 4 Michelin SUV's were installed and the handling, noise level and level of "mental" security have all improved dramatically!
The HT's are in basement should there ever be any question of recall etc.
BTW, now 7600 miles, love the car. Take weekend trips approximately 120 miles on highway with best mileage do date of 23.5 mpg, three adults, no luggage, no A/C. Manifold fix only time car has needed any attention. Amsoil 5W-20 since 4600 miles, will keep in until approx 10K with rotation at that time.
BTW, my car was assembled in Canada for what it's worth....brought into US with neceaasry modifications (gauges, emissions etc) and to date it has performed flawlessly!
regards to all...........

Almost 8,000 miles and no major problems w/ the Firestone HT's except that they didn't perform too well in the past winter (lightly to moderately snow-covered roads) and are obviously notoriously noisy on the road.

I'm looking at tirerack.com ... any opinions (or, better yet, experiences and feedback) on the Pirelli Scorpion S/T?

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/pirelli/pi_scrpst.jsp

A dealer near my house has a Scorpion package on the Tribute. Mostly it is a fantastic set of wheels with Pirelli tires. They used 255/60 R17's. That size is virtually identical in diameter to the 235'/60 R16's on a stock Tribute. Looks great.

I had same popping noise on our ES and to the sheer delight of my wife I FIXED IT!!!!
The noise in our case was from a binding of the upper edge of the cladding where it contacts the underlying surface of the threshold. I used a small (1/4 inch) wedge of a silicone spacer (like a small shim) to keep the top edge of the cladding from moving even slightly against the frame as the car body slightly torques. Believe me.....this solved the problem almost immediately however, your problem may not represent the same thing. What made me thing of it was your description of a popping like sound which is exactly as I would describe our noise.

Good luck!!!

ron

I have an ES with 7000 miles. At 5200 miles, I had a blowout on the right front Firestone, after hitting a curb at approx 20 mph. (avoiding an accident) The sidewall of the Firestone HT was shredded!! I pondered paying $85 to replace it, or replace them all with a different brand. I shopped at several different tire stores, the problem is that everyone else is replacing tires also, so inventory was almost non-existant. Several of the dealers looked at the defunct tire and said "yikes!" That made my decision to replace them all.
I now have Kelly Safari SUV's on the Tribute. They look fantastic, I've had many compliments. As for handling and noise..... it depends on the road surface. On asphalt, they are a little noisier... a little more whine. But on concrete they are superior! That was one BIG objection I had with the Firestones... driving down the interstate on asphalt was ok, but if the road changed to concrete (like a bridge) the noise became obnoxious. I think they feel "stiffer" if thats possible. I've tried some hard cornering, they grap the road well, no slip, no squawk, no squeel.
And the Kelly's were relatively (its thats possible) inexpensive, compared to the Michelins and others out there. $379 mounted, balanced, out the door price.
My Tribute will be 1 year old next month! And yes, I only have 7000 miles on it.
