I talked with the dealer who attempted to fix the fuel odor problem and told them fuel odor problem was back. They said that it wasn't much use to bring it in again until Mazda/Ford has a fix for the problem. So I called 800-222-5500 to see what the deal was.
The person I spoke to said that the technicians are working on a fix and the way to deal with the problem was to take the vehicle back to the dealer. I then told her the dealer told me not to bring it back until Mazda/Ford has a definite fix and asked her how I would know when that was. She said that Mazda/Ford would notify the dealers.
So now I either wait for Mazda/Ford to notify the dealers of a fix and HOPE that the dealer notifies me or keep calling the dealer or 800 number for updates. What a pain in the a$$.
For now I am starting it with the fan in the off position until I am moving and switching the fan off when sitting with the motor running for any length of time. Mazda sure has gone downhill since Ford has gotten involved.

The 800 number is useless, all they can tell you is if the recalls have been fixed on your vehicle. It certainly will be a pain to keep calling unless they issue a recall. Mine seems to be okay right now but it has come back in the past. At least the dealer is willing to work on it, but who wants a temp fix I want the real thing. Right on the money about Mazda going down hill with Ford involved. The worst thing about my 626 loaner car was the tranny which I believe is more crap from Ford.

You should demand from the dealer some type of corrective action on their part. They are there to provide service and support, especially with a brand new vehicle. If Mazda is having difficulties trying to figure out what the problem is with the fuel smell, that's not your problem. I would take the Tribute back to the dealer and force them to do something about it. Leave it there until they get it sorted. Force them to give you a loanner. They've got to do more than just say they can't help!
