I have had my Tribute ES V6 for over 6 months..and until now not a single problem other then the windshield wiper recall. All other recalls were fixed before receiving my vehicle.

My problem has just started this week. I have noticed that when accelerating from a dead stop, the car will only accelerate until 3000RPM then it will just keep reving at that level for about 10 seconds even with the gas pedal floored. Then slowly will creep its way up to 4000..then stopping again at 4000RPM until it finally shifts into second gear.

Once I got the car moving, I was able to reach a speed of over 60MPH although very slowly. I noticed before that the Tribute had a lot of pep and could hit 60MPH in no time.

Also trying to accelerate while in motion already is difficult also..doesn't feel like it has much power.

Does anyone know what this problem could be? I'm not a mechanic by any means...but almost seems like one or two cylinders just aren't clicking as it doesn't have the power it did before. Or it could be the transmission not delivering the power.

Will definitely be contacting my dealer ASAP. Just hoping I could get some feedback to see what other people think it could be.

Thanks

Sounds like you have a gear hanging....transmission trouble. If it were engine you'd punch it and the trans. would kick and the engine would shutter and pop and shake....then again if it isn't the transmission it could be the trans. sensor for the computer malfunctioning as it keeps the sync. of the engine and transmission in harmony....so to speak.

Don't wait...have it brought in via calling Mazda roadside tomorrow OR your dealer and I personally wouldn't drive it...you may not have major damage if it is something malfunctioning..

Obviously I'm no mechanic either....You may wanna ask the tech on this Mazda Club URL I'm posting for you...his name is Dan.

bob

http://www.mazdaclub.com/bbs/index.sht

My ES V6 had to have the distributor cap and one plug and wire replaced for similar symptoms. The reason it leveled off at 3000 RPM was that it wasn't developing enough power to accelerate normally. When the speed finally reached a shift point, it grudgingly shifted. But the power was wayyyyy down. Problem easily solved.

PSennett;

According to the owners manual the V6 uses a coil mounted at the spark plug. Therefore no distributor cap and plug wires are not needed.

Assuming this repair was under warranty, then there would be no reason for the dealer to make up this story.

I wonder now if the engine really does have a coil mounted on the plug. I have attempted to look at my own, but with the engine crowding I cannot see anything. I would thing that if there was a distributor and wires then I would have a least seen one of the 6 wires. I will have a better look when the snow goes away.

Rick

You are correct...under there is a "module" on the top of each spark plug cover.

I sit corrected. The term used was "coil", not distributor. One coil, one plug replaced.

I guess that means I was losing 18% of my power, which was a VERY noticible loss.

Corrected,
Patrick
