Hi Everyone,

I'm a new owner (even though
it's my wife's daily driver) of a sunburst red dx
since Oct 31.

This is a very interesting topic
here as I did think it odd that the owners manual and
oil cap mentioned 5w20 which I did not remember as
being very common.

I looked at the amsoil
distributors site which mentioned how this was a ford scam but
it seemed odd that it recommended that we should use
their 0w30 oil instead of the Ford recommended 5w30.

Wouldn't 0w30 be even thinner than the 5w30 that they are
saying offers less protection because of it's lower
viscosity?!?!?

Perhaps I am missing something as I am no expert at this
kind of stuff. I did find another link that has
another explanation
though.

had the below question and answer:

Houston
Texas : Why is it that the 2001 F150 uses 5w20 weight
oil this recommended it has the 4.6 liter .I have
never used any oil that thin,I havnt been able to get
an explaination. Thanks

James Healey: I
can't say why that engine, specifically, calls for
5W20, but I can say generally that automakers are
calling for lighter oil for a couple reasons:
1) Fuel
economy improves slightly becasue there's less friction
than with heavier oil.
2) Pollution regs are so
strict that automakers are tightening tolerances of
bearings, piston rings, valve seals and so on, eliminating
even the smallest crevices for unburned fuel to hide
and go out the tailpipe as pollution on the exhaust
stroke. Those closer tolerances often can't stand heavier
oil; it won't flow fast and easily enough to keep the
engines properly lubricated.

I am not sure what
oil I should put in our tribute yet (We still have
thousands of miles to go before that decision). Perhaps
there may be a reason that ford/mazda are recommending
the 5w20 other than that they are evil greedy
companies?

Any further comments are appreciated.

Brian L
