I encourage everyone who desires long life out of their engine to read the article titled "5-20W Oil Fords Big Lie". I'll remind everyone at this time the motor in your Tribute is made by Ford right here in the US and is identical to the engines found in the Ford Escape.
I always suspected what this article says and now I really believe it. Do not put 5W-20 Oil in your Tribute if you want long engine life, I'll sacrifice 1/4 mile to the gallon to get more than just a little over waranty coverage milage out of my engine. I recommend just as the article says to go with a 0W-30 or 5W-30 premium motor oil.
5W-20 is to thin to really save wear and tear on an engine when it really gets hot outside or if you may be towing a trailer.

Check this site out and look for the article.
Oh and by the way I am NOT an Amsoil Dealer or do I own stock in the company.

www.amsoil.com

I have several problems with their advertisement. They claim to be the best but I have read other reports that do not agree.

http://info.gdb.org/~djw/411/oil.html

If 5w-20 is so poor why do they make it? Seems like they are admitting they are making an inferior product.

I believe that extending the oil changing period beyond the manufactures reccomendations WILL void the warranty. I use Mobil 1 in my other vehicle and extend the change period as the vehicle is no longer under warranty.

I believe Amsoil makes a good product but the same as other manufactures they brag on their product.

David.

I'm coming up on my first oil change in my 2002, and have heard a good many things about Royal Purple synthetics. A local Mazda shop recommends it highly, as such I assume it doesn't void the manufacturers warranty. Has anyone ever tried this product before, and could give me some recommendations?

Hello Highcotton

Much to my chagrin, virtually all Mazda dealers in the Vancouver area use 5W30 rather than 5W20. I had to fight with them to use the latter for my last oil change. After reading the article you mentioned about Ford's oil scam, however, I'm less worried now about 5W30 and I suppose I'll use it.

Rich

Hi Everyone,

I'm a new owner (even though it's my wife's daily driver) of a sunburst red dx since Oct 31.

This is a very interesting topic here as I did think it odd that the owners manual and oil cap mentioned 5w20 which I did not remember as being very common.

I looked at the amsoil distributors site which mentioned how this was a ford scam but it seemed odd that it recommended that we should use their 0w30 oil instead of the Ford recommended 5w30.

Wouldn't 0w30 be even thinner than the 5w30 that they are saying offers less protection because of it's lower viscosity?!?!?

Perhaps I am missing something as I am no expert at this kind of stuff. I did find another link that has another explanation though.

http://www.usatoday.com/community/chat/2001-09-21-healey.htm
<\ br>had the below question and answer:

Houston Texas : Why is it that the 2001 F150 uses 5w20 weight oil this recommended it has the 4.6 liter .I have never used any oil that thin,I havnt been able to get an explaination. Thanks

James Healey: I can't say why that engine, specifically, calls for 5W20, but I can say generally that automakers are calling for lighter oil for a couple reasons:
1) Fuel economy improves slightly becasue there's less friction than with heavier oil.
2) Pollution regs are so strict that automakers are tightening tolerances of bearings, piston rings, valve seals and so on, eliminating even the smallest crevices for unburned fuel to hide and go out the tailpipe as pollution on the exhaust stroke. Those closer tolerances often can't stand heavier oil; it won't flow fast and easily enough to keep the engines properly lubricated.

I am not sure what oil I should put in our tribute yet (We still have thousands of miles to go before that decision). Perhaps there may be a reason that ford/mazda are recommending the 5w20 other than that they are evil greedy companies?

Any further comments are appreciated.

Brian L

Maybe, just maybe, the Ford guys are money grubbing short sighted Bozos. But when Honda recommends 5w-20, I gotta believe it can't be all that bad. Still, call me superstitious but when towing my boat in the summer, I will probably run 5-30 in my Tribby.
