after my wife had complained about cold air blowing on her feet in the winter, a little investigation found that the seals on the plastic duct that moves air from the fan to the heater core had shrunk and were leaking cold outside air when operating. Here in Regina, when its 40 below C, it is really noticeable. The Mazda engineers for some reason designed the duct with the overlaps facing the wrong way, and the seals shrank or deformed, and cold outside air flows out when in defrost mode, which here in the prairies, is for the entire winter. The easy fix was to remove the glove box, and using foil duct tape seal around the two connections on the duct from the fan case to the heater case. I also discovered the incredibly lightweight cabin air filter doing this, so I cleaned that out as well, probably for the first time judging by the bugs!
